Lost, damaged or delayed baggage
Before your flight, you should take a photo of your baggage and make a list of its contents. Have your contact information attached to and inside your baggage. Consider placing a tracker in your luggage.
What to do when a baggage issue happens
If your baggage or its contents are damaged, follow these steps to file a claim:
- Document the damage
- Take clear photos showing the damage to your baggage and belongings.
- Write a detailed description of what’s broken or damaged.
- Report the issue before leaving the airport
- Find your airline’s baggage service desk.
- Fill out the necessary forms, like a Property Irregularity Report (PIR).
- Save all receipts
- Keep receipts of repairs or replacement items to support your claim.
- These documents help ensure reimbursement or compensation.
Deadlines to file a baggage claim with the airline
If your baggage is lost, delayed, or damaged, you must file a claim within the airline’s deadline to be eligible for compensation, a refund, or reimbursement.
- Damaged baggage – File a claim within 7 days of receiving your baggage.
- Delayed baggage on international flights – File a claim within 21 days of receiving your baggage.
- Delayed baggage on flights within Canada – File a claim as soon as possible, but no later than the deadline in the airline’s tariff (policy).
- Lost baggage (not returned within 21 days) – File a claim as soon as the airline officially considers your baggage lost.
The airline could deny your claim if you do not submit a claim within these deadlines.
Remember to keep copies of your baggage information, baggage tags, and receipts or documents for any expenses related to your baggage claim.
